Captain Aji Anthony of the Rajputana Rifles was an officer whose brief military career was marked by courage, commitment and an unwavering sense of responsibility towards his men. Born on 25 December 1978 in Kerala, he was drawn towards the Armed Forces from his younger years and pursued his calling to serve the nation in uniform. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles and, during his service, was deputed to 57 Rashtriya Rifles, which was engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
By September 2006, Captain Anthony had already taken part in several operations in the challenging operational environment of Jammu and Kashmir. Serving with 57 Rashtriya Rifles in the Bandipora area, he remained prepared to respond whenever intelligence indicated the presence of terrorists. His dedication to duty was reflected in the manner in which he led his men, placing himself at the forefront whenever the situation demanded decisive action.
On 3 September 2006, security forces received credible information about the presence of terrorists in a village in Bandipora district. An operation was launched to locate and neutralise them, and a team led by Captain Aji Anthony moved into the area. The troops established a cordon around the suspected house and began the search operation, maintaining vigilance as they worked through the village.
The operation soon turned into a fierce engagement. While searching one of the houses at around 1800 hours, Captain Anthony's party came under heavy terrorist fire and was split into two groups. The situation placed the other group in immediate danger. Seeing the threat faced by his men, Captain Anthony did not hesitate. With complete disregard for his own safety, he took his buddy and rushed towards the house from where the terrorists were firing.
The Final Battle in Bandipora
Captain Anthony moved directly into the danger zone to engage the terrorists and protect his comrades. A fierce exchange of fire followed at close quarters. During the engagement, the young officer was critically wounded, but even after sustaining grievous injuries, he continued to fight.
Despite his severe wounds, Captain Aji Anthony displayed remarkable determination and succeeded in killing one of the terrorists. His final actions reflected the courage of an officer who refused to abandon his mission or leave his men exposed while danger surrounded them. He continued fighting until his injuries proved fatal, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on 3 September 2006.
