Major Ravinder Singh of the 11 Jat Regiment is remembered for an exceptional display of courage and determination during a prolonged counter-terrorism operation along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At the time of the action, he was serving as a Captain, and his conduct over several days demonstrated the courage, initiative and fighting spirit expected of an Indian Army officer operating in difficult terrain against armed terrorists.
On 3 September 2008, Captain Ravinder Singh received information about contact with terrorists at Tony Hut. Without hesitation, he moved towards the area with his team. The approach took them through a known minefield, after which he established a stop position in a deep nala to prevent the terrorists from escaping towards the Line of Control. The difficult terrain and operational risks did not deter him from remaining forward with his men and maintaining the position.
The operation continued into the following days, with the troops operating in challenging conditions and maintaining pressure on the terrorists. Captain Ravinder Singh remained actively involved throughout the engagement, demonstrating determination even as the operation extended for several hours.
The Operation Along the Line of Control
On 4 September, a terrorist occupying an entrenched and advantageous position opened indiscriminate fire on Captain Ravinder Singh. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he crawled through a treacherous nala filled with water and moved towards the flank of the terrorist position while under heavy fire.
Closing the distance despite the intense opposition, Captain Ravinder Singh launched a close-quarter assault and shot the terrorist dead. His action removed a dangerous threat and demonstrated exceptional courage in circumstances where any movement exposed him to further enemy fire.
The operation continued into 5 September, by which time Captain Ravinder Singh had been engaged in the operation for approximately 72 hours. In rain and extreme cold weather, he spotted another terrorist attempting to escape. Despite his own exhaustion and the continuing danger, he moved forward under covering fire from his party and closed in on the fleeing terrorist.
Displaying remarkable courage and determination, Captain Ravinder Singh eliminated the terrorist at close range. His actions over the three-day operation reflected an extraordinary willingness to expose himself to danger in order to prevent the terrorists from escaping and to ensure the success of the mission.
For his conspicuous bravery and valour in the face of heavy odds while fighting terrorists, Captain Ravinder Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra. The award recognised his exceptional courage during the operation and his determination to confront the terrorists despite the hazardous terrain, adverse weather and sustained enemy fire.
Major Ravinder Singh's story is an example of leadership under pressure and the determination required of soldiers serving in some of the most challenging operational environments. His actions during the September 2008 operation stand as a testament to the courage and professionalism of the Indian Army and the proud traditions of the 11 Jat Regiment.
