Rifleman Bashir Ahmad Khan of 160 Infantry Battalion (TA) JAK Rif made the supreme sacrifice on 29 September 2005 while serving in the Machil sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Machil sector, in Kupwara district along the Line of Control, has been one of the challenging operational areas for the Indian Army. On 29 September 2005, troops operating in the sector engaged a group of infiltrators, resulting in a gunbattle.
Contemporary reporting on the incident stated that four Army personnel made the supreme sacrifice and another soldier was injured during the exchange of fire with the infiltrators. The reports also stated that two infiltrators were believed to have been killed, although their deaths had not been officially confirmed at the time.
Rifleman Bashir Ahmad Khan was among the Army personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the Machil sector that day.
