Sowar Varinder Kumar Sharma of 60 Rashtriya Rifles was serving in Jammu and Kashmir when he took part in a counter-terrorist operation in Rajouri district on 25 September 2007.
During the operation, the troops came into contact with terrorists. Sowar Sharma displayed exceptional courage while engaging the attackers in the ensuing gunfight.
Courage Under Fire
Despite the danger, Sowar Varinder Kumar Sharma continued to engage the terrorists. During the fierce exchange of fire, he succeeded in eliminating two terrorists.
He continued fighting until he sustained fatal injuries. Having displayed conspicuous courage in the operation, Sowar Sharma made the supreme sacrifice on 25 September 2007.
His courage and sacrifice were formally recognised with the award of the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
