Special Police Officer Mukesh Kumar was only 23 years old when he made the supreme sacrifice during the terrorist attack on Hiranagar Police Station in Kathua district on 26 September 2013.
Mukesh Kumar was from Phallapur village in Jammu and had joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police as a Special Police Officer only around four months before the attack.
On the morning of 26 September 2013, terrorists attacked Hiranagar Police Station. The attackers opened fire on the police personnel and attempted to storm the station.
Mukesh Kumar was among the police personnel who confronted the attackers during the assault. He made the supreme sacrifice while performing his duty.
Contemporary reporting noted that he had only recently joined the police service and had not received formal police training. He had been deployed for duty at the police station when the attack took place.
His martyrdom came alongside that of Assistant Sub-Inspector Rattan Singh, Selection Grade Constable Pradeep Singh Jamwal and Constable Shiv Kumar during the Hiranagar attack.
Special Police Officer Mukesh Kumar's sacrifice remains part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's record of service and duty during the terrorist attacks of 26 September 2013.
