THE HONOUR POST

Squadron Leader Tony Paul Nanda, serving with 132 FAC Flight, was tasked on 15 September 1994 to evacuate casualties from Gota village in Jammu & Kashmir. On being informed that the casualties were victims of anti-national elements, he approached the 6,000-foot helipad with caution.

He swiftly loaded two casualties and occupied the pilot seat. As the helicopter came under fire from a nearby hill, a bullet grazed his head, causing severe bleeding. Despite being injured and dazed, Squadron Leader Nanda remained focused on the safety of his helicopter and passengers.

The Act of Valour

Under fire and suffering a critical injury, Squadron Leader Nanda took off and selected the safest escape route. Despite his own condition, he insisted on flying to Jammu so that the casualties could receive timely medical care.

For his exceptional courage, presence of mind and devotion to duty in the face of enemy fire, Squadron Leader Tony Paul Nanda was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
