Subedar Sujjan Singh served with 13 Kumaon of the Indian Army and was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir during counter-insurgency operations in 1994.
On 26 September 1994, his unit was conducting an operation near Zalurah village in Kupwara district after receiving information about the presence of armed terrorists in the area.
During the operation, the troops came under heavy fire from the terrorists. Subedar Sujjan Singh moved forward to provide cover and protect his men. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds but continued moving towards the terrorist position.
Subedar Sujjan Singh made the supreme sacrifice during the operation at Zalurah. His action enabled his team to continue the assault and complete the operation.
For his conspicuous bravery and supreme sacrifice, Subedar Sujjan Singh was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.
