20 October 1962 | A tribute to courage, duty and sacrifice
A Young Officer at the Frontier
2nd Lieutenant G. V. K. Prasanna Rao served with 4 Grenadiers during the 1962 India-China War. As tensions along the Himalayan frontier escalated, Indian troops were deployed in difficult terrain where steep mountains, limited routes and challenging conditions made the defence of forward positions exceptionally demanding.
The Battle at Namka Chu
On 20 October 1962, Chinese forces launched a major assault against Indian positions in the Namka Chu sector. The engagement placed Indian troops under intense pressure. Amid the fighting and the disruption of movement across the river, 2nd Lieutenant Prasanna Rao continued to lead his men. He made the supreme sacrifice during the battle.
The Maha Vir Chakra
He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously in recognition of his gallantry. His name belongs among the Indian soldiers and officers whose service during the 1962 war is remembered with respect.
The Honour Post pays tribute to 2nd Lieutenant G. V. K. Prasanna Rao, Maha Vir Chakra, who made the supreme sacrifice on 20 October 1962. His courage and devotion to duty will be remembered with honour.
