Captain Sanjay Chauhan of 16 Rajputana Rifles made the supreme sacrifice on 28 October 1994 during Operation Sahas in Jammu and Kashmir. He was serving as the leader of a Ghatak party tasked with engaging terrorists believed to be gathered in the Lachhampur area.
The operation was planned after intelligence indicated the presence of a significant terrorist group. Captain Chauhan led his assault party while a reserve party was positioned nearby to provide support. The troops entered a dangerous operational situation in which the changing course of the engagement placed the party under considerable pressure.
The operation ended in tragedy. Captain Chauhan and four other members of his party were captured by terrorists and subsequently lost their lives. The other personnel were Second Lieutenant Anil Yadav, Rifleman Dalbir Singh, Rifleman Krishan Kumar and Rifleman Sri Girish Singh.
Captain Chauhan's sacrifice remains part of the history of 16 Rajputana Rifles and the Indian Army's operations in Jammu and Kashmir. His posthumous Shaurya Chakra recognises his gallantry. His story is also a reminder of the responsibility carried by officers who lead soldiers into demanding operational environments.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Captain Sanjay Chauhan of 16 Rajputana Rifles, who made the supreme sacrifice on 28 October 1994 during Operation Sahas. His service, courage and sacrifice deserve to be preserved in the nation's memory.
