19 October 2018 | Honouring a distinguished Special Forces officer
On 19 October 2018, Colonel Sangram Singh Bhati, Shaurya Chakra recipient and former Commanding Officer of 10 PARA (Special Forces), passed away at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi following multiple-organ failure caused by jaundice.
Known as “Mustafa of the Desert,” Colonel Bhati hailed from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and belonged to a family with a long tradition of military service. His grandfather served during the Second World War, while his father, Colonel (Retd.) Shyam Singh Bhati, served in the 1965 and 1971 wars. Colonel Sangram Singh Bhati became the third generation of his family to join the Armed Forces.
During his service with the Indian Army's elite 10 PARA (Special Forces), Colonel Bhati developed a reputation for courage, determination and operational leadership. He eventually commanded the unit, which is known for its expertise in desert warfare and special operations.
One operation associated with his service involved a covert mission against a Lashkar-e-Taiba network in Jammu and Kashmir. According to published accounts, then-Major Sangram Singh Bhati and Captain Vikas Yadav spent four days undercover inside a terrorist camp, gathering intelligence before the operation culminated in the elimination of four terrorists. His conduct during operations earned him recognition for gallantry.
Colonel Bhati was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his acts of bravery. His career reflected the demanding responsibilities shouldered by Special Forces officers, who often operate in small teams and undertake complex missions requiring professional skill, sound judgement and courage under pressure.
His mortal remains reached Jodhpur on 19 October 2018. Soldiers from his former unit accompanied the funeral procession, including the serving Commanding Officer of 10 PARA (Special Forces). Before the funeral, the national flag that had draped his mortal remains was handed to his father, Colonel (Retd.) Shyam Singh Bhati. His passing was mourned by members of the defence community and those who had served alongside him.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Colonel Sangram Singh Bhati, Shaurya Chakra, honouring his gallantry, leadership and distinguished service to the Indian Army. His contribution to the nation's defence remains worthy of remembrance and respect.
