Constable Amit Kumar of the 115th Battalion, Border Security Force, made the supreme sacrifice on 13 October 2022 while performing duty near the Bhagirathi River in West Bengal.
Reports of the incident state that a BSF team was conducting a boat operation in the border area in pursuit of suspected cattle smugglers. During the operation, strong currents affected the boat, and Constable Amit Kumar fell into the river and was swept away. Search efforts followed the incident.
The incident illustrates the hazards faced by personnel undertaking river patrols and other duties in difficult natural conditions. Constable Amit Kumar lost his life while carrying out an assigned responsibility, far from the public view in which much of border service takes place.
