Constable Dharam Singh served with the 3rd Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force during a crucial period in India's frontier history. On 21 October 1959, he was among the personnel involved in the patrol near Hot Springs in Ladakh.
The patrol was attacked by Chinese Army personnel using automatic weapons and mortars. In exposed terrain, with the opposing force holding a significant numerical and weapons advantage, the CRPF personnel stood their ground in a fierce and unequal confrontation.
Dharam Singh made the supreme sacrifice during the attack. The bravery of the Hot Springs patrol became the reason 21 October is observed as Police Commemoration Day, remembering police personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty.
His service and sacrifice remain part of the CRPF's proud legacy and a reminder of the courage required to protect the nation under the most difficult circumstances.
