Constable G. Yedukundalu of the Central Reserve Police Force's 12th Battalion made the supreme sacrifice on 30 October 2008 during a bomb blast at a mobile check post in Guwahati, Assam. He hailed from Kottapalli village in Markapur, Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh.
On that day, personnel of the 12th Battalion had established a mobile check post at the Ganeshguri overbridge in the Dispur area. The post was intended to prevent insurgents from entering Guwahati city. At approximately 11:30 a.m., personnel were checking vehicles and people entering the city when a three-wheeler approached the checkpoint.
The troops directed the driver to stop for checking. He stopped the vehicle but attempted to flee, leaving it behind. As personnel moved to pursue him, an explosion occurred inside the three-wheeler. The blast claimed the lives of 21 civilians and Constable Yedukundalu.
The CRPF's official memorial account records that the actions of the personnel at the checkpoint helped avert an even greater tragedy. Had the explosion occurred in a crowded market, the loss of civilian life could have been substantially greater. Constable Yedukundalu's sacrifice is remembered in connection with the protection of the people of Guwahati.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Constable G. Yedukundalu, whose life was lost while carrying out his assigned duty. His supreme sacrifice and the lives affected by the Ganeshguri blast remain part of the nation's remembrance.
