Constable (General Duty) Ghansham Gurjar of the 59th Battalion, Sashastra Seema Bal, made the supreme sacrifice on 14 October 2016 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He was part of an SSB patrol returning to Digibari camp after completing law-and-order duties when terrorists attacked the vehicle at Hobitabad, under Zakura Police Station.
The attack was sudden and indiscriminate. As the terrorists opened fire on the SSB vehicle, the personnel retaliated. An exchange of fire followed, placing the members of the patrol in immediate danger. During the encounter, Constable Ghansham Gurjar sustained severe head injuries and attained martyrdom.
The SSB's tribute specifically remembers his courage and valour during the attack. His sacrifice came while he was carrying out assigned duties in Jammu and Kashmir, where security personnel were required to support law-and-order responsibilities in a challenging environment.
The incident demonstrates the risks faced by personnel even when returning from a duty assignment. The attack on the vehicle turned the patrol's journey back to camp into a life-threatening confrontation. The response by the SSB personnel, and the sacrifice made by Ghansham Gurjar, became part of the force's record of courage in service.
