Constable Lal Mohan Paswan was a member of the 116 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force who made the supreme sacrifice while guarding the Old Secretariat in Srinagar on 1 October 2001.
Born on 2 January 1976, Lal Mohan Paswan belonged to Ughadhani village in Rohtak district of Haryana. He served with 116 Battalion CRPF and was deployed in Srinagar as part of the security arrangements at the Old Secretariat.
On 1 October 2001, four terrorists approached the Old Secretariat in Srinagar in a vehicle. The compound was being guarded by personnel of the CRPF along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Border Security Force.
Three of the attackers got out of the vehicle near the gate while the fourth rammed the vehicle into the entrance and detonated an explosive.
Constable Lal Mohan Paswan was positioned near the gate when the blast took place. He received serious injuries in the explosion and made the supreme sacrifice.
Following the initial blast, the three remaining terrorists entered the compound through the opening created at the gate and opened indiscriminate fire on the security personnel.
A joint operation was subsequently launched by the security forces. The three terrorists were eventually eliminated during the operation.
The official CRPF account records Constable Lal Mohan Paswan's sacrifice during the attack and preserves his name among the personnel remembered for their service in Jammu and Kashmir.
He is survived in the official record by his wife, Smt. Rina Devi.
