The Incident
On 1 October 2004, troops of 28 Battalion CRPF were conducting a search operation in the general area under Police Station Churachandpur, Manipur. As the troops approached Khuga Dam, insurgents waiting in ambush opened indiscriminate fire. The troops immediately launched a counter-attack despite the attackers occupying covered and tactically advantageous positions.

The CRPF troops advanced using fire-and-move tactics and forced the insurgents to flee from the area. During the counter-attack, Constable Md. Abash Khan and Constable Mohd. Wazid Ali sustained severe bullet injuries while spearheading the attack.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, Constable Md. Abash Khan continued fighting from the front and remained engaged in the operation. The CRPF record states that three insurgents were reportedly killed in the encounter.

Constable Mohd. Wazid Ali succumbed to his injuries on the same day. Constable Md. Abash Khan continued his fight after being wounded but later succumbed to his injuries on 5 October 2004.

He made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation, leaving behind a record of courage and determination under fire.
