Constable Nitin Kumar of 40 Battalion, Border Security Force, made the supreme sacrifice while confronting a terrorist attack in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, during the intervening night of 2 and 3 October 2016.
Nitin Kumar and Constable Barun Kumar were deployed on night duty at the Counter-Insurgency Post in Stadium Colony, Baramulla.
At around 10 pm, the personnel noticed unusual movement after hearing stray dogs barking in the vicinity. Constable Barun Kumar covered Nitin Kumar as he went forward to check the suspicious movement.
Nitin Kumar detected a human movement and raised an alarm. The terrorists opened fire, and the BSF personnel immediately retaliated. A grenade was also thrown during the exchange.
Constable Nitin Kumar sustained multiple injuries but returned to the bunker and continued retaliatory fire. His determined action, along with Constables Barun Kumar and Pravindra Kumar, helped force the attackers to flee.
Despite his injuries, Nitin Kumar continued fighting. He later succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice.
In recognition of his gallantry and courage, Constable Nitin Kumar was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously.
