Constable Ram Niwash of the 75th Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, made the supreme sacrifice on 13 October 1991 during an anti-terrorist operation in Punjab. Despite being injured by heavy gunfire, he continued firing at the terrorists before succumbing to his injuries.
The 75th Battalion was deployed in Punjab for anti-terrorist operations. Following an encounter in the Dhand Mianpur area of Tarn Taran district, in which two terrorists were killed by personnel of the battalion, a combing operation was launched to locate additional suspected terrorists in the area.
At approximately 11:25 a.m. on 13 October 1991, a party of the 75th Battalion, including Constable Ram Niwash, was moving through paddy fields when heavy fire erupted from the fields. Constable Ram Niwash, who was in close proximity to the attackers, sustained injuries.
The rest of the party returned fire. Although injured, Constable Ram Niwash continued firing and inflicted injuries on the terrorists before succumbing to his injuries. His actions during the operation were subsequently recognised with the Police Medal for Gallantry, awarded posthumously.
Constable Ram Niwash's courage under fire remains an important part of his service record. Even after being wounded, he continued to engage the attackers while carrying out his duty.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Constable Ram Niwash, honouring his gallantry, service and supreme sacrifice.
