The 85th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force was deployed in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir for anti-terrorist operations. On 20 October 1996, troops launched an operation against terrorists who had taken shelter inside a house.
During the operation, the terrorists opened heavy fire on the CRPF personnel, leading to a fierce encounter. Constable Ramesh Singh was leading the attack when he sustained severe injuries in the exchange of fire.
Despite being injured, Singh continued firing at the terrorists and shot one of them. His actions during the encounter reflected his determination to continue the operation under fire. He later succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice.
For his gallant action, Ramesh Singh was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously. His service and sacrifice on 20 October 1996 remain part of the CRPF’s history of anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
