Constable Ravi Kumar of 53 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, made the supreme sacrifice while deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for anti-terrorist operations.
On 3 October 1991, CRPF personnel of 53 Battalion were deployed in the Kokernag market area of Anantnag district. After an initial search, the troops established pickets along routes leading to the market.
Taking advantage of the crowd, unidentified terrorists approached one of the pickets and hurled a grenade.
The grenade explosion severely injured Constable Ravi Kumar and Constable Roshan Lal. Despite their injuries, both personnel returned fire at the attackers.
The terrorists escaped into the crowd. The troops refrained from indiscriminate firing to avoid civilian casualties and launched a search operation.
Constable Ravi Kumar later succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom in the line of duty.
The Honour Post honours his service and pays tribute to his supreme sacrifice.
