Constable Roshan Lal of 53 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, made the supreme sacrifice while serving in Jammu and Kashmir.
On 3 October 1991, troops of 53 Battalion were deployed in the Kokernag market area of Anantnag district to counter terrorist activity.
After an initial search of the area, CRPF personnel established pickets along the routes leading to the market. Unidentified terrorists used the cover of the crowd to approach one of the pickets.
The terrorists hurled a grenade at the picket. The resulting explosion severely injured Constable Roshan Lal and Constable Ravi Kumar.
Despite being seriously wounded, both personnel returned fire. The attackers escaped by mingling with the crowd, and the troops avoided indiscriminate firing because of the risk to civilians.
Constable Roshan Lal later succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom in the line of duty.
The Honour Post honours his service and pays tribute to his supreme sacrifice.
