Constable S. G. Lemle, 64 BN CRPF
On 31 October 2001, personnel of the 64th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force were deployed at Nepali Market, under Police Station Guwahati, Assam, to counter insurgent threats during the Laxmi Pooja festival. The deployment required heightened vigilance as troops monitored the area and maintained security amid the gathering of people.
While the personnel were carrying out their duties, two armed insurgents approached Constable S. G. Lemle. One attacker used the surrounding crowd as cover and opened fire, seriously injuring him. Despite being wounded, Constable Lemle confronted the attackers and managed to hold one of them. The second assailant intervened, allowing the insurgents to escape.
Constable Lemle’s injuries proved fatal, and he later succumbed on 31 October 2001. His actions in the face of an armed attack reflected courage and resolve while performing his assigned duty. His sacrifice remains part of the history of the 64th Battalion and the CRPF’s service in counter-insurgency deployments.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Constable S. G. Lemle, who made the supreme sacrifice in Guwahati, Assam. We extend our respects to his memory and honour his service to the nation.
