Constable Sarwan Das was one of the CRPF personnel serving along India's remote frontier in Ladakh in 1959. On 21 October, the patrol at Hot Springs encountered a sudden attack by Chinese Army personnel.
The attackers possessed automatic weapons and mortars, while the Indian patrol was caught in exposed terrain and faced overwhelming odds. Despite the danger, the personnel resisted the assault in defence of their post and their country.
Sarwan Das made the supreme sacrifice during the confrontation. The events at Hot Springs became a defining chapter in the history of India's police forces and led to the annual observance of Police Commemoration Day on 21 October.
His name is remembered among the brave personnel whose sacrifice reflects the courage, discipline and sense of duty that continue to define the CRPF.
