On 21 October 1959, Constable Shiv Nath Prasad was part of a CRPF patrol operating near Hot Springs in the remote Ladakh region. The patrol was tasked with protecting India's frontier during a period of heightened tension along the Indo-Tibetan border.
The patrol came under attack from Chinese Army personnel armed with automatic weapons and mortars. Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing superior firepower in difficult terrain, the Indian personnel resisted the assault with courage and determination.
Constable Shiv Nath Prasad made the supreme sacrifice during this confrontation. His martyrdom became part of the defining history behind Police Commemoration Day, observed every year on 21 October in honour of police personnel who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.
His courage and devotion to duty remain a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by India's police forces in defending the country's security and territorial integrity.
