Corporal Anil Kumar was serving with Indian Naval Air Squadron 315 when he made the supreme sacrifice on 1 October 2002.
The squadron was established on 1 October 1977 and had completed 25 years of service when the accident occurred. Its silver jubilee was being celebrated at INS Hansa, Goa.
As part of the anniversary programme, two Ilyushin-38 maritime reconnaissance aircraft conducted a ceremonial flypast near Dabolim.
The two aircraft were flying in formation when they collided in mid-air. Both aircraft subsequently crashed.
Corporal Anil Kumar was among the naval personnel aboard the aircraft involved in the collision.
All 12 naval personnel aboard the two aircraft made the supreme sacrifice in the accident.
The tragedy became a defining moment in the history of INAS 315. The squadron subsequently erected a memorial, Prerna Sthal, and observes 1 October as its Remembrance Day in honour of the 12 personnel who were lost.
Corporal Anil Kumar's name remains recorded among those 12 naval personnel who made the supreme sacrifice on 1 October 2002.
