Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagtar Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir Police made the supreme sacrifice on 3 October 2002 while leading a police team in an operation in Kathua district.

Following a midnight terrorist attack on Hiranagar jail, security forces were searching the surrounding area for the attackers. Police received information about the presence of terrorists in the Sjandi Nala area of Hiranagar.

A police team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagtar Singh moved towards the area to investigate the information.

As the police team reached the area, the terrorists opened fire on the personnel. The police immediately returned fire and a fierce encounter followed.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagtar Singh was fatally wounded during the exchange of fire and made the supreme sacrifice.

Two other police personnel were injured in the encounter. The two terrorists involved in the gun battle were subsequently killed.

Contemporary reports identified Jagtar Singh as the police officer leading the team and confirmed that he made the supreme sacrifice during the encounter at Sjandi Nala.

His martyrdom remains part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's history of service during the years of terrorism in the region.
