18 October 1994 | Remembering Flight Lieutenant Pankaj Ahluwalia

Flight Lieutenant Pankaj Ahluwalia of the Indian Air Force made the supreme sacrifice on 18 October 1994 while serving with No. 101 Squadron at Sirsa Air Force Station in Haryana. He died in a MiG-21 aircraft accident during a training sortie.

Pankaj Ahluwalia was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 11 June 1988 after completing his training through the National Defence Academy and the Air Force Academy. He was a fighter-stream pilot and had been serving in the Air Force for approximately six years by the time of his supreme sacrifice.

In October 1994, No. 101 Squadron was operating MiG-21 aircraft from Sirsa. Training sorties formed an important part of the squadron's operational responsibilities, maintaining the readiness and proficiency required of fighter pilots.

On 18 October 1994, Flight Lieutenant Ahluwalia took off from Sirsa for a scheduled training sortie. Available service-history accounts record a MiG-21 accident involving No. 101 Squadron on that date. The exact sequence of events and technical cause require further confirmation from an official accident report.

His death was a loss to his family, his squadron and the Indian Air Force. The risks faced by military aviators extend beyond combat, as they train and operate complex aircraft to maintain the country's air defence capability.

Flight Lieutenant Pankaj Ahluwalia's service remains worthy of remembrance as part of the dedication and commitment of India's military aviators.

The Honour Post pays tribute to Flight Lieutenant Pankaj Ahluwalia of No. 101 Squadron, Indian Air Force, who made the supreme sacrifice on 18 October 1994 at Sirsa, Haryana. We honour his service and remember his sacrifice with respect and gratitude.
