20 October 1962 | We honour his courage and sacrifice
Courage Amid the Battle
During the India-China War of 1962, Indian soldiers defending positions along the eastern Himalayan frontier faced overwhelming pressure, difficult terrain and intense enemy fire. On 20 October, Chinese forces launched a major offensive against Indian positions in the Namka Chu area.
Grenadier Braham Singh, serving with The Grenadiers, was among the soldiers caught in the fierce fighting near the Nyamkachu River. As the battle continued, the need to sustain the defence and support fellow soldiers became critical.
An Act of Selfless Service
During the engagement, Grenadier Braham Singh left the protection of his bunker to carry grenades to soldiers in an adjoining bunker. This action exposed him to enemy fire. He was struck by enemy fire while undertaking the task and made the supreme sacrifice on 20 October 1962.
His actions reflect the courage and comradeship that define military service. Even under intense fire, the responsibility to support fellow soldiers remained paramount.
A Braveheart Remembered
The sacrifice of Grenadier Braham Singh forms part of the history of the Indian Army's defence of the Himalayan frontier in 1962. His name deserves to be remembered with dignity, alongside the soldiers who faced extraordinary danger in the service of the nation.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Grenadier Braham Singh of The Grenadiers, who made the supreme sacrifice on 20 October 1962. His courage, selflessness and devotion to his comrades will always be honoured.
