Havildar Madan Sarup of 7 DOGRA, The Dogra Regiment, is remembered for his exceptional courage and determination during a cordon and search operation in Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir. His bravery during the operation earned him the Kirti Chakra, one of India's peacetime gallantry awards.
According to the Ministry of Defence memorial account, the operation took place in the Poshkar heights area near Zandpal village. At approximately 0615 hours, 'A' Company noticed a group of armed men moving through the area. Havildar Madan Sarup led a detachment to intercept them.
The group opened heavy fire from dominating positions. Despite coming under fire and sustaining injuries, Havildar Madan Sarup continued to lead his men. He single-handedly shot two of the armed men and, despite being wounded, pressed forward with his team, engaging further opponents.
After sustaining a second gunshot wound to his chest, he continued advancing and helped his team overcome another opponent. Lance Naik Budhi Singh pursued and engaged the fifth. The memorial account credits the team's actions with eliminating five armed men and recovering weapons, ammunition and grenades.
Havildar Madan Sarup succumbed to his injuries during the operation. His actions reflected extraordinary courage, leadership and devotion to duty under fire. His posthumous recognition with the Kirti Chakra stands as a lasting tribute to his bravery and sacrifice.
His story deserves to be preserved as part of the history of 7 DOGRA and The Dogra Regiment, and as a tribute to the soldiers who face danger in the service of the nation.
