On 20 October 1995, troops of the 23rd Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force were conducting an operation in the jungles of Kokrajhar, Assam. The troops encountered insurgents who had established strong positions behind cover and were firing heavily to prevent the CRPF personnel from advancing.
As the exchange of fire continued, the insurgents’ positions created a serious obstacle to the troops’ progress. Head Constable Emanual Topno moved out of his cover and launched an assault against the insurgents. His action helped break the deadlock and facilitate the advance of the troops under fire.
During the fierce gun battle, Topno neutralised one insurgent. He was himself severely injured in the encounter and later succumbed to his injuries. An AK-47 rifle and an SLR were also recovered during the operation.
In recognition of his gallantry and bravery, Emanual Topno was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously. His sacrifice on 20 October 1995 remains a tribute to his courage and commitment to duty during a dangerous operation.
