Head Constable and Driver Kunjumon of 143 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force, made the supreme sacrifice on 3 October 2007 while serving in Manipur.
143 Battalion CRPF was deployed in Senapati district, one of the insurgency-affected areas of Manipur. On 3 October 2007, troops of the battalion were proceeding from their battalion headquarters towards their company location to launch an operation.
Near Keithemnambi village under Sapermeina Police Station, the troops came under an ambush laid by insurgents at a tactically advantageous position.
Although the troops were initially in a difficult position, they counter-attacked the insurgents and forced them to flee from their entrenched positions.
Head Constable and Driver Kunjumon fought from the front during the counter-attack and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
For his exceptional courage and bravery during the operation, he was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously by the President of India.
