Lance Naik Jagjit Singh of 2 Sikh was born on 18 January 1965 in village Mathe, in Patiala district of Punjab. He was enrolled in the Sikh Regiment in May 1984. In October 1992, his unit was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-terrorist operations under Operation Rakshak.
On 3 October 1992, at about 3:00 pm, Lance Naik Jagjit Singh was part of a search and apprehend patrol in the Badgam Sector when he noticed three terrorists running towards nearby paddy fields. Showing exceptional courage, he left the moving vehicle and pursued them on foot. He succeeded in apprehending Gulzar Ahmed Malik, also known as Gul Pahawan, who was identified in the gallantry citation as a Pakistan-trained terrorist and chief of the Al-Mujahideen group.
Later that evening, at about 5:30 pm, information obtained from the apprehended terrorist led the patrol towards another terrorist who had taken position in a thick maize field. When the terrorist opened indiscriminate fire, an encounter followed.
Lance Naik Jagjit Singh was wounded during the exchange but continued to engage the terrorist despite his injuries. The terrorist was subsequently engaged by other members of the patrol. An AK-56 assault rifle, ammunition and a grenade were recovered from him.
Lance Naik Jagjit Singh made the supreme sacrifice during the action on 3 October 1992. In recognition of his courage, devotion to duty and exceptional bravery, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously.
