Lance Naik S. P. Mukherji served with the 74th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force during a period of intense counter-terrorism deployment in Srinagar. On 21 October 1992, a bulletproof vehicle carrying CRPF personnel was moving through the city while on duty.

When the vehicle reached the Magarmal Chowk taxi stand, it slowed because of the crowd. A grenade wrapped in cloth was thrown into the vehicle by a suspected terrorist. It exploded before the personnel inside could respond, leaving several of them injured.

Despite their injuries, the personnel got out of the vehicle and took positions. By that time, the attacker had disappeared into the crowd. The injured were taken to hospital, but Lance Naik S. P. Mukherji succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice.

His martyrdom is remembered on 21 October, the day observed as Police Commemoration Day. His service reflects the dangers faced by CRPF personnel working to protect civilians and maintain security amid terrorism.

The Honour Post pays tribute to Lance Naik S. P. Mukherji for his service and sacrifice. His name remains part of the remembrance of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
