LIEUTENANT COMMANDERLieutenant Commander A. C. Karadi was an officer of the Indian Navy serving with Indian Naval Air Squadron 315, known as the “Winged Stallions”.
On 1 October 2002, INAS 315 was marking its silver jubilee at its home base at INS Hansa in Goa. Two Ilyushin-38 maritime reconnaissance aircraft were taking part in a ceremonial flypast over Dabolim.
The two aircraft were flying in close formation when they collided in mid-air at approximately 9:54 in the morning.
Lieutenant Commander Karadi was one of the six crew members aboard one of the aircraft. The collision resulted in both aircraft crashing near Dabolim.
All 12 naval personnel aboard the two aircraft made the supreme sacrifice. Lieutenant Commander A. C. Karadi was among them.
The tragedy occurred during an important milestone in the history of INAS 315, which had been commissioned on 1 October 1977 and had completed 25 years of service.
Lieutenant Commander Karadi's name remains recorded among the 12 Indian Navy personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the 1 October 2002 aviation tragedy.
