18 October 2003 | Remembering Lieutenant Dheerendra Singh Atri
Lieutenant Dheerendra Singh Atri of the Army Service Corps, serving with 3 Rajput, made the supreme sacrifice on 18 October 2003 during Operation Rakshak in Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. For his conspicuous gallantry and leadership under fire, he was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
Born on 12 September 1978 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Dheerendra Singh Atri came from a family with a distinguished military tradition. His father, Brigadier Devendra Singh Atri, served in the Rajput Regiment, and his maternal grandfather was a veteran of the First World War.
After graduating in hotel management from the Pusa Institute in New Delhi, he pursued his ambition of joining the Armed Forces. He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps on 10 December 2002 and subsequently served with 3 Rajput on cross-attachment.
During Operation Rakshak, the battalion was operating in Kupwara, where its personnel were engaged in counter-terrorism operations. In the early hours of 18 October 2003, Lieutenant Atri's party came into contact with terrorists during an operation in a forested area.
When his men came under heavy automatic fire, he led from the front and charged towards the terrorists, allowing his troops to regroup and continue the engagement. He killed two terrorists at close quarters and continued advancing despite sustaining a serious shoulder wound.
Determined to prevent further harm to his men, Lieutenant Atri charged again and fatally wounded another terrorist. During this action, he was struck in the chest by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries. Inspired by his courage, the troops continued the engagement and eliminated the remaining terrorists.
His actions demonstrated exceptional leadership and disregard for personal safety in the face of grave danger. His supreme sacrifice at the age of 25 remains an enduring example of an officer leading from the front.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Lieutenant Dheerendra Singh Atri, Kirti Chakra awardee, who made the supreme sacrifice on 18 October 2003 in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty will always be remembered.
