Major Bhupinder Singh of 4 Horse, also known as Hodson's Horse, was an officer of the Indian Army who distinguished himself during the 1965 Indo-Pak War.
Born on 19 September 1928 in Harnampura village of Ludhiana district, Punjab, he was commissioned into 4 Horse on 11 December 1949. By the 1965 war, he was serving as a Squadron Commander.
During Operation Riddle, Major Bhupinder Singh led his squadron in the armoured battles around Phillora and Sodreke. His squadron continued fighting despite suffering heavy losses to its tanks.
On 19 September 1965, during the Battle of Sodreke, his tank was struck by an enemy Cobra missile and caught fire. Major Bhupinder Singh suffered severe burns and injuries and was evacuated for treatment in Delhi.
Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on 3 October 1965.
For his leadership, courage and gallantry during the 1965 war, Major Bhupinder Singh was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.
