19 October 1999 | Remembering a courageous officer
On 19 October 1999, Major Gurpreet Singh, belonging to the 10th Battalion, The Dogra Regiment, and serving with 11 Rashtriya Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terrorism operation in the Kishtwar-Doda sector of Jammu and Kashmir. He was 27 years old.
Hailing from Tepla village in Saha tehsil, Ambala district, Haryana, Major Gurpreet Singh was the son of Colonel Inder Singh, a veteran of the Indian Army. Inspired by his family's military background, he pursued a career in the Armed Forces and was commissioned into the 10th Battalion, The Dogra Regiment.
During his service, Major Gurpreet Singh was deployed with 11 Rashtriya Rifles, undertaking counter-terrorism duties in the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. The region's steep slopes, dense forests and difficult approaches posed considerable challenges for troops conducting search operations against armed groups.
On 19 October 1999, Major Gurpreet Singh led his team during a search operation in the Kishtwar-Doda sector. As the troops advanced towards the suspected location and established a cordon, the armed men opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange.
During the engagement, Major Gurpreet Singh sustained a bullet injury and was grievously wounded. Despite his injuries, he continued to lead and encourage his men before collapsing. He was evacuated but succumbed to his injuries.
His actions reflected the courage and responsibility expected of an officer leading soldiers in a high-risk operation. His commitment to his men and his duty remains an important part of his legacy.
Major Gurpreet Singh's supreme sacrifice left his family, fellow officers and soldiers mourning the loss of a young officer whose military career had been cut short while serving the nation.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Major Gurpreet Singh of the 10th Battalion, The Dogra Regiment, serving with 11 Rashtriya Rifles, who made the supreme sacrifice on 19 October 1999. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty will be remembered with honour and gratitude.
