Major Ritesh Sharma served with 17 Jat of the Indian Army.

During the Kargil War, he served with his unit in combat operations and took part in the fighting in the Mushkoh Valley. After the war, he continued to serve in Jammu and Kashmir under Operation Rakshak.

On 25 September 1999, Major Sharma was wounded during a counter-terrorist operation in Kupwara. He was evacuated for treatment and continued to fight for his life for several days.

Major Ritesh Sharma succumbed to his injuries on 6 October 1999.

His service during the Kargil War and subsequent operations in Jammu and Kashmir remain part of the record of 17 Jat. Major Ritesh Sharma made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
