Major Vijit Kumar Singh of 17 (Para) Field Regiment made the supreme sacrifice on 4 October 2001 during counter-insurgency operations along the Assam-Manipur border.

A search-and-destroy operation was launched after information was received about the presence of NSCN(IM) cadres. Major Vijit Kumar Singh led the operation and acted as the leading scout.

When the patrol came under ambush, he returned fire and charged towards the insurgents. Even after being fatally wounded, he continued engaging the attackers and protected his men. For his extraordinary courage, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
