Naib Subedar Rajesh Kumar of The Mahar Regiment, serving with 30 Rashtriya Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice on 28 October 2014 during a search-and-destroy operation in the Wadarbala forest area of Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. His actions during the operation earned him the Kirti Chakra posthumously, one of India’s peacetime gallantry awards.
The operation brought the troops into contact with terrorists in difficult forest terrain. The steep slopes and natural features of the area presented serious challenges, particularly as the engagement developed at close range. In those circumstances, the responsibility of leading men under fire demanded composure, tactical judgement and personal courage.
Naib Subedar Rajesh Kumar played a decisive role during the encounter. As the situation unfolded, he moved to block an escape route along a nala, despite the difficult ground. When the terrorists opened fire at close range, he directed his men to take cover and continued engaging the adversaries.
Even after sustaining injuries, he continued fighting. He engaged the terrorists and eliminated another before making the supreme sacrifice. His actions demonstrated determination in the face of immediate danger and a commitment to his mission and fellow soldiers.
His gallantry was formally recognised through the award of the Kirti Chakra posthumously. The citation records the courage and leadership he displayed during the operation, including his efforts to prevent the terrorists from escaping and his continued resistance despite being wounded.
Rajesh Kumar hailed from Tihra village in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. His journey from his home state to service in the Indian Army reflected the commitment of soldiers who undertake demanding duties far from their families. His martyrdom left a lasting loss for his loved ones and the men who served alongside him.
Naib Subedar Rajesh Kumar’s story stands as a record of leadership under fire and courage in the most difficult circumstances. His posthumous Kirti Chakra honours not only the actions of 28 October 2014 but also the dedication with which he served. The Honour Post pays tribute to his service, his gallantry and the supreme sacrifice he made in the line of duty.
