Naik Chain Singh of 9 Punjab was martyred on 10 October 1962 during the Sino-Indian War at Tsengjong in the then North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). His actions during the fighting became an enduring example of courage, leadership and devotion to his fellow soldiers.

When Chinese forces attacked the Indian position, Naik Chain Singh and his men resisted despite facing a numerically superior enemy. The defenders fought back as the position came under pressure and their ammunition ran out.

When his comrades were ordered to withdraw, Naik Chain Singh took up a light machine gun and remained behind to provide covering fire. Despite being grievously wounded by enemy fire, he continued to man his weapon, giving his comrades an opportunity to withdraw. He was ultimately martyred at his position.

At a moment when the safety of his comrades depended on covering fire, Naik Chain Singh stood his ground against the advancing enemy. His actions reflected the courage and selflessness of a soldier who continued fighting even when he was gravely wounded.

For his exceptional bravery, Naik Chain Singh was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously. His gallantry during the 1962 war remains part of the Indian Army's proud history of courage and sacrifice.

Naik Chain Singh made the supreme sacrifice while fighting Chinese forces and protecting his fellow soldiers. His martyrdom on 10 October 1962 remains a testament to his courage and unwavering devotion to duty.
