Naik Hanamanth Shankarappa Bhutali of the Corps of Military Police died on 29 October 2010 after suffering a heart attack while on duty at a military station in Kolkata. His death marked the loss of a soldier who had devoted years of his life to service in the Indian Army.
A Career of Service
Bhutali was born on 22 July 1978 in Karnataka’s Bagalkote district. He joined the Indian Army in 1995 and was inducted into the Corps of Military Police. During his career, he served in several locations and operational areas, including Jammu and Kashmir, and participated in Operation Parakram and Operation Rakshak.
After serving in different postings, Bhutali was assigned to a military station in Kolkata in 2009. He continued his duties there until October 2010.
His Final Day on Duty
On 29 October 2010, Bhutali suffered a heart attack while on duty. He was admitted to the Command Hospital in Kolkata, where he received medical attention. Despite treatment, he could not be saved.
Remembering His Service
Bhutali was survived by his wife, Nilambika, and their two children, Deepa and Rakesh. His passing left his family without a husband and father, and his colleagues without a fellow soldier who had served the Army for many years.
His circumstances differ from those of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in combat. Nevertheless, his years of service and death while on duty deserve respectful remembrance.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Naik Hanamanth Shankarappa Bhutali for his years in uniform and his commitment to duty. His story recognises the many forms of service and loss experienced by members of the armed forces and their families.
