Naik Rambeer Singh Tomar of 26 Rashtriya Rifles, serving on deputation from 15 Kumaon, made the supreme sacrifice on 18 October 2001 during a counter-terrorism operation in Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir. For his exceptional courage and determination, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

Born on 15 August 1970 in Prempura village of Morena district, Madhya Pradesh, Rambeer Singh Tomar joined the Indian Army on 28 July 1989. He began his military career with the Kumaon Regiment before being deputed to 26 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-terrorism duties in Jammu and Kashmir.

On 18 October 2001, his unit received information about terrorists hiding inside a house in Doda district. Naik Tomar volunteered to lead the assault team into the building, confronting the threat at close quarters.

During the operation, he engaged the terrorists with grenades and at close quarters. As the assault continued, he entered an adjoining room where another terrorist was hiding. Despite sustaining a grievous gunshot wound to the eye, he continued fighting and threw a grenade that eliminated the remaining threat. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

His actions reflected extraordinary courage and a determination to protect his fellow soldiers even when severely wounded. His sacrifice remains a testament to the fighting spirit and selfless service of the Indian Army.
