Rifleman Zahid Abass Mir served with the 5 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and made the supreme sacrifice in the Gurez Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on 7 October 2006.
During a night operation against heavily armed terrorists attempting to cross the Line of Control, Rifleman Zahid Abass Mir was part of a search party tasked with closing in on the suspected terrorists.
He accompanied his team commander towards the suspected position while another group provided covering fire. As they moved closer, two terrorists suddenly emerged from behind boulders and opened fire.
Rifleman Zahid Abass Mir sustained severe bullet injuries during the exchange. Despite his injuries, he continued to engage the terrorists and remained committed to the operation.
He ultimately succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
For displaying exceptional courage and devotion to duty in the face of the enemy, Rifleman Zahid Abass Mir was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
