On 10 October 2002, Sepoy Sarwan Kumar Dhukiya of the Jat Regiment, serving with 34 Rashtriya Rifles, was martyred while fighting terrorists at Mirpura in Jammu and Kashmir. Serving as Light Machine Gun Detachment Number One, he displayed exceptional courage during a fierce encounter.

When terrorists dispersed into a paddy field and a dry water channel under covering fire and grenade attacks, Sepoy Dhukiya recognised that the enemy had to be engaged directly inside the ditch. He crawled along the channel under fire, closing the distance between himself and the terrorists.

In a series of close-range gunfights, he eliminated three terrorists. A fourth terrorist, firing from behind cover, struck him in the forehead. Bleeding profusely and enduring severe pain, Sepoy Dhukiya refused to abandon the fight. He raised his light machine gun and shot the fourth terrorist before succumbing to his wounds at the Base Hospital.

Even after suffering a devastating injury, Sepoy Dhukiya continued to fight. His determination in those final moments reflected extraordinary courage and devotion to duty. He pressed on despite his grave condition, completing his engagement against the terrorists before his injuries claimed his life.

For his gallantry, Sepoy Sarwan Kumar Dhukiya was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously. His actions at Mirpura stand as a testament to the courage of an Indian soldier who confronted danger at close quarters and continued fighting despite being grievously wounded.

Sepoy Sarwan Kumar Dhukiya made the supreme sacrifice on 10 October 2002 while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. His courage, resolve and selfless service remain worthy of the highest respect.

The Honour Post pays tribute to Sepoy Sarwan Kumar Dhukiya of the Jat Regiment, serving with 34 Rashtriya Rifles. We honour the braveheart who was martyred while fighting terrorists, remember his extraordinary courage and salute his supreme sacrifice for the nation.
