Sepoy Sonam Wangchok of 14 Jammu and Kashmir Militia made the supreme sacrifice on 20 October 1962 during the India-China War in Ladakh. He was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for gallantry during the conflict.

In October 1962, Chinese forces launched a major offensive against Indian positions across Ladakh. Indian soldiers stationed at isolated frontier posts faced difficult terrain, extreme altitude and serious challenges in maintaining communications, supplies and reinforcement.

The soldiers defending the region continued to carry out their duties under immense pressure. Sepoy Sonam Wangchok's name is preserved among the personnel of 14 J&K Militia remembered for their sacrifice during the Ladakh operations of 20 October 1962.

The posthumous Vir Chakra awarded to Sepoy Sonam Wangchok represents formal recognition of his gallantry. While historical accounts document the wider fighting in Ladakh, further individual citation records are required to describe his precise actions and the circumstances of his supreme sacrifice in detail.

The 1962 India-China War left a lasting mark on the military history of Ladakh. The service of soldiers who defended the frontier under extraordinarily demanding conditions remains an important part of the nation's history.
