Sergeant Khairnar Milind Kishor of the Indian Air Force’s 617 Garud Flight made the supreme sacrifice on 11 October 2017 during a counter-insurgency operation on the outskirts of Hajin village in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir. He was deployed with the Rashtriya Rifles.
At approximately 4:40 a.m., heavily armed terrorists emerged from their hiding place and attacked with automatic weapons and grenades. Sergeant Milind returned accurate fire, pinned down the attackers and blocked their escape route.
Despite being grievously wounded by bullets and shrapnel, he held his position and continued engaging the terrorists. During the ensuing close-quarter confrontation, he shot one terrorist and grievously wounded another before succumbing to his injuries at 92 Base Hospital.
For his exceptional courage, indomitable spirit and disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Khairnar Milind Kishor was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
The Honour Post pays tribute to his courage, service and supreme sacrifice.
