19 October 1962 | Remembering a gallant leader

On the night of 19–20 October 1962, Subedar Sonam Stobdan of the 14th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Militia, made the supreme sacrifice while commanding the Indian position at Chandani in Ladakh during the India-China War.

Born on 30 March 1928 in Leh, Ladakh, he was the son of Tashi Wangail and Chhering Palzom. He served in the Jammu and Kashmir Militia and rose to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officer, undertaking duties in a region where military service demanded resilience and familiarity with challenging mountain terrain.

In October 1962, the 14th Battalion was deployed along the frontier as tensions with China escalated into open hostilities. Subedar Stobdan commanded a team of 29 soldiers at Chandani, an isolated position exposed to the dangers of high-altitude warfare.

During the night of 19–20 October, a much larger Chinese force attacked the position with automatic weapons and mortars. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Subedar Stobdan led his men in a determined defence. He continued to direct the resistance as the engagement intensified and the defenders suffered casualties.

Subedar Stobdan was seriously wounded during the fighting and eventually succumbed to his injuries. His leadership and courage in the face of overwhelming odds were recognised with the Maha Vir Chakra, awarded posthumously.

His actions remain part of the military history of Ladakh and the defence of India's frontier during the 1962 war. His example reflects the responsibility borne by leaders who stand with their troops in the most difficult circumstances.

The Honour Post pays tribute to Subedar Sonam Stobdan, Maha Vir Chakra, honouring his leadership, courage and supreme sacrifice in the defence of the nation.
