At a young age, Lieutenant Gautam Jain had already taken on the responsibilities of an Army officer in an operational area where courage, leadership and quick decisions were tested every day. On 1 November 2001, while leading a search party in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, he came face to face with armed terrorists. He led his men through the encounter and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Lieutenant Gautam Jain was born on 29 May 1979 in Thane, Maharashtra, and hailed from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was the son of Shri Sumat Prakash Jain and Smt Sudha Jain. He completed his schooling at Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar in Indore in 1996. Driven by the aspiration to serve the nation in uniform, he cleared the entrance examination for the National Defence Academy and went on to receive his military training before joining the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
After completing his training, he was commissioned into 173 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery in 2000. Though young in service, he was entrusted with responsibilities in an area that demanded constant operational alertness.
The Operation in Rajouri
In 2001, 173 Field Regiment was deployed in the Kalakot area of Rajouri district. On 1 November, intelligence inputs indicated the presence and movement of terrorists in the Dambal Nala area near Dahot village.
Three search parties were organised to act on the information. They were led by Lieutenant Gautam Jain, Lieutenant Amit Samanta and Lieutenant R.K. Jha.
The party led by Lieutenant Jain was the first to make contact with the terrorists. When challenged, the armed men opened fire from higher ground, triggering a fierce gunfight.
Lieutenant Jain was leading from the front and directing his men amid the heavy exchange of fire. During the encounter, he sustained multiple bullet injuries. Naik Bhagwan Singh, who rushed forward to assist his officer, was also critically wounded.
Despite their injuries, both soldiers continued to display courage and determination. Their injuries, however, proved fatal, and Lieutenant Gautam Jain and Naik Bhagwan Singh made the supreme sacrifice on 1 November 2001.
A Legacy of Courage
Lieutenant Gautam Jain's life was brief, but his service reflected the responsibility and courage expected of an officer of the Indian Army. He was entrusted with leading his men in a difficult operational environment and stood at the forefront when the search party came under fire.
His story is also inseparable from that of Naik Bhagwan Singh, whose attempt to reach and assist his officer during the encounter remains a powerful reminder of the bond between soldiers.
Lieutenant Gautam Jain was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal in recognition of his gallantry.
The Honour Post pays tribute to Lieutenant Gautam Jain of 173 Field Regiment. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty remain part of the story of India's brave soldiers.
