Sepoy Choudhary Ramji Bhai of the Army Service Corps made the supreme sacrifice on 3 November 1999 during the Fidayeen attack on the Defence Public Relations Office at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar.
The attack began in the evening when terrorists stormed the office complex and opened fire. Major Pramod Purushottam, the Defence Public Relations Officer, was inside his office with five soldiers. Three journalists were also present for a meeting.
As the attack unfolded, Major Purushottam directed the journalists to move to a place of cover. The soldiers then confronted the attackers, engaging them in a close-quarter fight inside the premises.
Sepoy Choudhary Ramji Bhai made the supreme sacrifice during the encounter. He was among the five soldiers who stood alongside Major Purushottam in resisting the attackers.
Their courage and resistance helped save the lives of the journalists who had taken shelter inside the office. The incident remains an important chapter in the remembrance of the personnel who defended the Defence Public Relations Office that evening.
Sepoy Choudhary Ramji Bhai's name has continued to be included in Army tributes to the six personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the attack.
On his martyrdom anniversary, The Honour Post pays tribute to Sepoy Choudhary Ramji Bhai of the Army Service Corps.
